Hvordan definerer vi grenser og hvordan definerer grensene oss, våre relasjoner og arbeid? Finnes det etiske eller moralske grenser for grenseoverskridende samarbeid, og hvordan vurderes diskusjonen om kulturell boikott av Russland i lys av andre geografier?

Kirkenes og Sør-Varanger blir omtalt som “grenseland”, der nærhet til grensene til Russland, Finland, Barentshavet og Sápmi er definerende, ikke bare for områdets administrativt-politiske avgrensning, men for områdets historie, kultur, befolkning og politiske status. Utveksling og samarbeid på tvers av landegrensene har lange røtter - med krigen ble imidlertid mange bånd til Russland nærmest kuttet over natta, etterfulgt av steile diskusjoner om sanksjoner og kulturboikott.

Sammen med lokal erfaring fra grenseområdene i nord, skal Transborder Café: In Borders We Trust, løfte et internasjonalt perspektiv og dele erfaringer med kunstnerisk, journalistisk og kulturelt arbeid langs, på og over landegrenser.

INVITERTE GJESTER:

Christina Henriksen er visepresident i Samerådet - en samisk organisasjon som arbeider med samepolitiske oppgaver, grunnlagt i 1956. Henriksen er født i Girkonjárga/Kirkenes, Sápmi og har bred erfaring med urfolkssamarbeid og internasjonalt arbeid med utdanning, språk, kultur og vannrettigheter. Henriksen er tidligere Sametingsrepresentant i Norge, medlem av Norske Samers Riksforbund og er styreleder for den internasjonale urfolksfestivalen Riddu Riđđu.
Veli Başyiğit er kulturarbeider basert i Istanbul og jobber i Anadolu Kültür, en ideell kulturinstitusjon grunnlagt i 2002 for å støtte produksjon av kultur og kunst i Tyrkia og tvers av landet grenser. Başyiğit har bakgrunn fra kulturstudier, sosiologi og sosialantropologi, og har gitt ut en forskningsrapport om kunstnerisk ytringsfrihet publisert hos Siyah Bant, en plattform som forsker på og dokumenterer sensur av kunst og forvarer ytringsfrihet i Tyrkia. Başyiğit arbeider også med å registrere og formidle den kulturelle og historiske arven fra Diyarbakır, som regnes som en viktig kurdisk by, gjennom nettutstillingen "Diyarbakır's Memory".
Ksenia Novikova er en journalist med norsk-russisk bakgrunn, og uttrykker selv at hun aldri har likt spørsmålet: «Er du mest russisk eller norsk?». Novikova har bred erfaring med arbeid i grenseområdene i nord, først som som journalist, hvor hun gjennom flere år har dekt gruvekonkurs, flyktningstrøm, etterretning-done-wrong, invaderende arter og grensekryssende prosjekter, etterfulgt av arbeid med folk-til-folk-samarbeid i Barentssekretariatet, preget av koronapandemi og Russlands invasjon av Ukraina. I dag arbeider Novikova i NRK i Oslo.
Vadim Gololobov er en teaterregissør, lysdesigner og kurator, og er en del av A Russian Engineering Theatre AKHE, som bidrar til årets åpningsshow på Barents Spektakel. Han har tidligere vært en del av det russisk-tyske teateret DEREVO, og har siden 1996 vært en del av av AKHE som både lysdesigner og regissør. I fjor flyttet AKHE hele sin virksomhet fra Russland til Frankrike og Finland på grunn av deres motstand mot Russlands krig i Ukraina.

Moderator: Arne O. Holm er journalist og redaktør i High North News, en uavhengig avis som utgis av High North Center på Nord Universitet. Holm har bred erfaring som journalist på Svalbard og nordområdene forøvrig. I 2021 flyttet Holm hjemmekontoret til en bobil og la ut på en flere måneders lang High North Tour for å møte og intervjue folk på sin vei. Under Barents Spektakel 2023, besøker det mobile hjemmekontoret Kirkenes!

Transborder Café innledes med en “bobilsamtale” mellom Prokhor Gusev og Arne O. Holm fra som en innledning til panelsamtalen. Prokhor Gusev er teaterregissør, skuespiller og mimer i eksil, og er i dag regissør hos DAVVI - Senter for scenekunst. Gusev har laget podkasten Privet emigrantam og antikrigsprosjektet 1 life - 1 minute, og har også vært med å etablere den uavhengige teatergruppen IKURS i Moskva, som i dag er stengt på grunn av den politiske situasjonen i Russland. I dag er han regissør hos DAVVI - Senter for scenekunst i Hammerfest. Under Barents Spektakel spiller Gusev i hjemmeteaterforestillingen 80°.

Kulturelt innslag: Smakebit på hjemmeteaterforestillingen Propaganda Machine:

"God kveld! Programmet "Zavtra" er på lufta.” Propaganda Machine er en fiktiv dokumentar-forestilling i form av en nyhetssending basert på ekte materiale fra russisk fjernsyn. Publikum inviteres til å stille spørsmål på direkten - og gis dermed en mulighet til å humanisere TV-verten. I Propaganda Machine kan til og med værmeldingene viske ut grensene mellom den politiske virkeligheten og fiksjonen. Manusforfatter: Leo Braverman, skuespiller: Anna Khlestkina, regissør og klipper ønsker å være anonyme.

Dørene åpner én time før arrangementsstart, baren på Ofelas holder åpent.

How do we define borders and how do the borders define us, our relationships and work? Are there ethical or moral limits to cross-border cooperation, and how is the discussion of a cultural boycott of Russia assessed in the light of other geographies?

Kirkenes and Sør-Varanger are referred to as “borderlands”, where proximity to the borders of Russia, Finland, the Barents Sea and Sápmi is defining, not only for the area's administrative-political demarcation, but for the area's history, culture, population and political status. Exchange and cooperation across national borders have long roots - with the war in Ukraine however, many ties to Russia were cut almost overnight, followed by discussions on sanctions and cultural boycotts.

Together with local experience from the border areas in the north, The Transborder Café: In Borders We Trust will raise an international perspective and share experiences with artistic, journalistic and cultural work along, on and across national borders.

INVITED GUESTS:

Christina Henriksen, Vice-president of the Saami Council, a Saami organisation dealing with Saami policy tasks, founded in 1956. She was born in Girkonjárga/Kirkenes, Sápmi, and has broad working experience on international and indigenous peoples´cooperation, education, languages, culture and clean water. Henriksen is a previous Member of the Sámi Parliament in Norway, member of the Norwegian Saami Association, and the board director of the international indigenous festival Riddu Riđđu.

Veli Başyiğit, an Istanbul-based cultural worker and works at Anadolu Kültür - a non-profit cultural institution founded in 2002 to support the production and sharing of culture and art across Turkey and abroad. Başyiğit´s educational background is from Cultural Studies, Sociology and Social Anthropology. His research report on the obstacles to artistic freedom of expression has been published at Siyah Bant, a platform established to research and document cases of censorship in the arts in Turkey and to defend artistic freedom of expression. He is currently involved in the digital archive and online exhibition project “Diyarbakır’s Memory”, with the purpose of recording and sharing the cultural and historical legacy of the predominantly-Kurdish city of Diyarbakır.

Ksenia Novikova, a journalist with a Norwegian-Russian background. She expresses herself that she has never liked the question: "Do you feel more Russian or Norwegian?". Novikova has broad working experience in the borderlands in the north. She has worked as a journalist from Kirkenes, covering mining bankruptcies, refugee crises, intelligence-done-wrong stories, invasive species and border-crossing projects over several years. More recently she was involved in several people-to-people cooperation projects through The Norwegian Barents Secretariat, at a time characterised by the coronavirus pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Today, Novikova works at NRK in Oslo.

Vadim Gololobov is a theater director, lighting designer and a curator and part of A Russian Engineering Theatre AKHE, which contributes to this year´s opening show at Barents Spektakel. He has previously been part of the Russian-German theater DEREVO, and has since 1996 been part of AKHE as both a lighting designer and a director. Last year AKHE moved their base to France and Finland due to their opposition against Russia's war in Ukraine.

Moderator: Arne O. Holm, journalist and the editor of High North News, an independent newspaper published by the High North Center at Nord University. Holm has extensive experience as a journalist on Svalbard and the Arctic. In 2021, Holm moved his home office to a caravan and embarked on a several-month long High North Tour to meet and interview people on his way. During Barents Spektakel 2023, the mobile home office will make a stop in Kirkenes!

Caravan Pre Talk: Transborder Café will be introduced with a caravan talk between Arne O. Holm and Prokhor Gusev, a theatre director, actor and mime in exile and stage director at DAVVI - Senter for scenekunst. Gusev is also the creator of the podcast Privet emigrantam and the antiwar project 1 life - 1 minute, and is also the co-founder of independent theatre group INKURS in Moscow, but which is now closed due to the political situation in Russia. During Barents Spektakel Gusev is part of the Home Theatre Performance 80°.

Cultural input: Teaser from the Home Theatre Performance Propaganda Machine: "Good Evening! The program "Zavtra" is on air.” Propaganda Machine is a mockumentary performance in the form of a newscast based on real material from Russian television. As part of the play, the audience is invited to participate with real-time questions about the current political situation, and in that way given an opportunity to humanise the host-machine. In the Propaganda Machine, even the weather forecasts might blur the boundaries between political reality and fiction.
